First up today is a brand new interview Samara did for V Magazine, which features an adorable new photoshoot she took herself in her home. Samara is self-styled and wearing Louis Vuitton in all the photos, and it’s a fun little shoot which I think shows her personality really well! Hailing from across the globe in Australia, budding actress Samara Weaving is certainly claiming her space in the American film industry. To date, the starlet already has an impressive repertoire of roles to her name, claiming the spotlight in a plethora of praised television and film productions including Home and Away, The Babysitter, Mayhem, and Ready Or Not, among many others. Now, the 28-year-old actress stars as Claire Wood, a dream-chaser caught up in the world of movie-making, on Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix series Hollywood, set to premiere this Friday, May 1.

At the nexus of race, gender, and sexuality in the Los Angeles limelight, Hollywood follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in a Post-World War II Tinseltown. Shedding light on the hardships and injustices placed upon marginalized groups in mainstream media, the series provides an empowered storyline that showcases what the entertainment landscape might resemble if rid of toxic, decades-old power dynamics. “For me, the show is about honoring these people who paved the way for us for equality in the industry,” explains Weaving. “They started fighting a long time ago, and this show is a great reminder for us not to take that for granted and to keep fighting the good fight.”

Weaving’s character, Claire, powerfully fronts the lead female archetype, unapologetically making her goals known and desires flaunted in a stance for female empowerment amid a male-dominated industry. “I really admire Claire in the way that she can just walk into a room and have the confidence to tell people her opinion,” says Weaving. “I think I need to take a page out of her book and stand up for myself in different situations. As a young woman, it’s easy to be overlooked. Sometimes I’ll be in a situation where someone will look at me at face value and not consider that I might have relevant ideas or they’ll see me as a naive young woman. I like that Claire makes sure that she’s heard.”

Weaving’s badass female persona speaks volumes to the show’s forward-thinking agenda, and her story is only one of several given the spotlight on the series. A star-studded cast including Darren Criss, David Corenswet, Jeremy Pope, Laura Harrier, Jake Picking, Rob Reiner and Patti LuPone depicts the future of filmmaking through atypical characters that relentlessly fight for a place in an industry accustomed to conformity. “It’s pretty rare to love every single person on the set, but we did,” Weaving says. “We were so comfortable with each other. There’s a scene with Rob Reiner, Patti LuPone, and me, where we’re being so awful to each other. It would have been so nerve-wracking if I didn’t have the relationship I did with those two legends to pull that off completely. I call them the most awful things, but it was actually so much fun.”

As the highly-anticipated series’ debut approaches amidst social distancing orders, Weaving shared a few snaps from home with V in head-to-toe Louis Vuitton to celebrate the show’s release. An ambassador for the brand, Weaving shared fond words of the leading creative director: “Nicolas Ghesquière is the most kind man and he’s a genius when it comes to clothes,” she says. “He really has such a blazingly creative brain.” (V Magazine)

Louis Vuitton has unveiled its Pre-Fall 2019 lookbook. Shot by frequent collaborator Collier Schorr, the star-heavy lookbook features actors, musicians, and models, including Chloë Grace Moretz, Léa Seydoux, Ruth Negga, Indya Moore, Kelela, and more, and has been made to resemble actors’ composite cards. The outerwear is the highlight of this print-heavy collection. From the beaches of Home and Away to the powerful Oscar-nominated film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Samara Weaving has come a long way. Now, the Adelaide-born actress is reprising her role as a Bonds ambassador by fronting our new sweats campaign for Bonds Originals. As one of a diverse tribe of Aussie originators, including music superstar Flume and international model Duckie Thot, Samara is killing it globally in their respective industries. We caught up with the yoga-loving, tea-guzzling 26-year-old to ask her all about what it’s like to be a woman working in Hollywood today.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love the opportunities I’ve been given to play strong female roles set in unique and different worlds and settings. In SMILF (Showtime) my character Nelson is naïve and oblivious to the ramifications of her sexuality. I admire Frankie Shaw for choosing to make this character layered and different. The baby daddy’s new girlfriend could easily have been jealous and selfish but instead, Nelson wants what’s best for her new family. And she’s flawed too. She puts her foot in her mouth and makes wrong choices. Every character she writes has curious depth and dimensions. I admire Frankie and the team for that.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I don’t think there’s such a thing as a typical day for me. That’s part of why I love my job. One day I could be stabbing a guy in the head covered in fake blood, another day I’ll be trying not to laugh in a scene with the cast from SMILF. They’re all so hilariously talented it’s difficult not to. Another day I’m spending ten hours in a corset with my best friends pretending to be a posh aristocrat in the 1900’s.

What’s been your proudest achievement to date so far and why?

Beating my boyfriend at backgammon. Even though that’s not that hard.

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

My sister. She works so hard and is fiercely intelligent. She’s so driven and wildly funny. Even though I’m the eldest sister I go to her for life advice. She’s inspiring and a best friend. She’s graduating soon and she won the University Medal and topped her year in psychology. She’s going to conquer the world with her brain.

What does originality mean to you?

It means trying not to be anyone but myself. Embracing the weird.

Do you have a go-to style or look?

Sweatpants, hair ties, chilling with no make-up on. Thanks, Drake!

What’s your favourite Originals item/colour?

The sweatpants are so comfortable and so colourful. My favourites are the plum and mustard basics (coming soon!)

What five things can you not live without?

My plants. My glasses. My pizza. My beer. My tea.

What advice do you have for someone trying to break into your industry?

It’s all about luck so take every opportunity you can. If you can write, write yourself a short film, get your artistic friends together and make it happen. It’s amazing how many doors a really great short can open for you. And it teaches you the other aspects of the industry which always comes in handy.

What’s on the agenda for 2018?

I’m jumping up and down with anticipation to watch Picnic at Hanging Rock. Director, Larysa Kondracki is a genius and I’m in her debt. It was the most wonderful production to be a part of. Season two of SMILF is shooting later this year so that will be a lot of fun. I love playing Nelson and working with those talented women. There are a few other projects in the air so I’m taking it day by day. My dad’s 60th is this year so I’m so excited to go and see the family and celebrate what a wonderful loving human he is.

What’s it like to be a female actor working in Hollywood at the moment?

It’s incredible. Over the past two years, I’ve noticed such a change. Even though we have a lot more work left to do, I’m extremely grateful to be apart of such a wonderful important empowering movement.

You’re about to star in a remake of Picnic at Hanging Rock. What was it like to be part of such an iconic Australian story?

Where to begin? I think the most amazing part about Picnic at Hanging Rock was Larysa’s vision. She took an iconic Australian masterpiece and made it haunting, hilarious, modern and entirely unique. It included all women from every walk of life, from 13 years old to over 50. I don’t have one bad thing to say about any one of them. We had gruelling hours and such beautiful, but uncomfortable, costumes in such tumultuous conditions, yet we held each other up. There was no competing or cattiness. It was unlike any other production I’ve worked on. Larysa is going to be a huge name very soon. I’m so very lucky I can call her my friend and mentor. It’s rare to make such close friends on set and I’ve met some of my best friends during those months. I wish I could go back and do it all over again.
